Hotel de la Poste Review: French Quarter Charm with W Hotel Style
If you are new to New Orleans and want a prime location in the French Quarter, the Hotel de la Poste, A Renaissance Hotel is arguably one of the top Marriott properties to choose for being central to the action.
Introduction: A French Quarter Hub
This hotel offers a fantastic blend of history and modern style. It recently swapped over from a Marriott W to a Renaissance Hotel in February of this year. During our recent visit, we noticed that much of the hotel’s collateral and amenities—from the soap and shampoo to the valet bag tags and even the checkout receipt—still featured the old W branding. Having previously stayed here when it was a W, I can confirm not much has changed aesthetically, which is a good thing for those who appreciate the W’s unique flair.
Arrival and Seamless French Quarter Access
The hotel itself is definitely unique, centered around a beautiful courtyard. Every time I’ve stayed here, I’ve been lucky enough to secure a room with a courtyard exit. This meant my room featured double French doors leading directly out to the central courtyard. This provided the fantastic flexibility of skipping the walk through the internal hotel hallways; I could simply walk straight out of my room and access the French Quarter immediately. This ease of entry and exit is incredibly valuable when staying in such a desirable location.
The Hotel Experience
Despite the rebranding, the hotel maintains the distinct, sophisticated atmosphere it inherited. The centerpiece of the property is the fabulous courtyard, which features a lovely staircase that my wife and I typically like to use for taking pictures. For being located right in the heart of the busy French Quarter, the hotel provides a welcome oasis of calm and beauty. The general design of the public spaces is modern, sleek, and contributes significantly to the overall appeal of a stay here.
Hotel Room: The ‘W’ Aesthetic
The rooms are a decent size, designed to maintain the signature W “Sexy” aesthetic. The key features include large showers and bathrooms that are generally bigger than what you find at most W properties. The lighting is intentionally dim, creating a moody atmosphere, and the beds are very comfy—ideal for passing out on after a long night of exploring New Orleans. For guest convenience, there is plenty of storage space, a Nespresso machine, and a fridge, making the rooms both stylish and functional.
Restaurants Onsite (Including Operating Hours)
The dining and bar areas at this hotel are extremely nice and retain the modern design aesthetic. If you walk in expecting a traditional Renaissance design, you will be surprised; the areas definitely have the W vibes, similar to a Whiskey Parker or Whiskey Blue style design work for both the breakfast and the bar areas.
| Breakfast Area | Modern/Upscale Breakfast | Extremely nice area with a W Hotel-style design. | Breakfast Service (Typically 6:30 AM – 10:30 AM) |
| Bar Area | Cocktails/Lounge | Highly stylized area, great for evening cocktails. | Evening Service (Typically 4:00 PM – 11:00 PM) |
Shopping Onsite (Including Operating Hours)
While the hotel itself doesn’t feature an extensive on-site retail space, its location is perfect for shoppers. This area of the French Quarter is home to countless boutiques and shops, with many unique mini boutiques located immediately next to and across from the hotel entrance. Guests looking for shopping will find ample opportunities just by walking out the front door.
Pools
The hotel does feature a pool, which is a significant amenity for its location in the heart of the French Quarter. The pool is on the smaller side, but it still provides a pleasant space to layout and enjoy the sun.
Amenities
Beyond the pool, the hotel’s greatest amenity is its closeness to everything in the French Quarter. While we avoid the wilder parts of Bourbon Street, we love the proximity to beautiful restaurants and are only a short walk away from late-night cocktails at the famous Carousel Bar nearby.
The Spa
The Hotel de la Poste – French Quarter, A Renaissance Hotel does not have a dedicated spa facility on site.
Final Closing
If you ever plan to visit New Orleans, I strongly recommend staying at this Renaissance. You will get the stylish, sleek W vibes in your hotel room, bathroom, and decor, but you will benefit from the more favorable Renaissance pricing. Its superb location makes it the perfect anchor for an amazing trip to the city.
