Our Approach
Your Golden Ticket to Free Travel
Whether it’s airlines, hotels, or transferable credit card points, loyalty programs are the primary tool for cutting travel costs.
The single fastest way to accumulate points — many cards offer 50,000 to 100,000+ points after hitting a minimum spend.
- Time it right: apply before planned big expenses (renovations, holiday shopping) so the minimum spend happens naturally.
- Know your categories: use the right card for dining, groceries, gas, or travel to maximize everyday earning.
Fixed points (Delta SkyMiles, Hilton Honors) lock you into one brand. Transferable points — Chase, Amex, Capital One, Citi — go further.
- Usually transfer at 1:1 to airline and hotel partners, so you can chase whichever offers the best redemption.
- Watch for transfer bonuses (e.g., 1,000 → 1,250 miles) — they can turn a good redemption into a great one.
Sign up for every airline alliance (Star Alliance, SkyTeam, Oneworld) and major hotel chain, even ones you rarely use.
- You’ll pick up points from shopping portals and card transfers regardless.
- It also means you’re ready for any surprise promo or elite-status offer.
Sign-up bonuses matter, but your regular purchases are a steady, ongoing source of points.
- Shopping portals: click through your loyalty program’s portal before buying online — you’ll “double dip” with the portal and your card.
- Dining programs & referrals: link your card for automatic bonus points, and refer friends for sign-up bonuses of your own.

Strategic Redemption: Value Over Volume
Earning points is half the battle — redeeming them for outsized value is where the real savings happen.
Cash back or statement credits are convenient, but they’re almost always the lowest-value redemption — often just 0.5–1 cent per point.
A $5,000 flight might cost just 50,000 points — that’s 10 cents per point. Economy and standard rooms still yield a solid 1–2 cents per point.
Award availability is often limited, especially in premium cabins. Flexible dates (mid-week, off-season) and destinations unlock better redemptions.
Many hotel cards include annual free night certificates — track their expiration and maximum point value, especially for high-end properties.
General Travel Cost-Cutting Habits
Even with a strong points strategy, these habits stretch your travel budget further.
Arguably the single biggest lever — shoulder-season and true off-season travel is cheaper and less crowded across the board.
Book flights and hotels months ahead for the best rates, but stay open to last-minute deals for flexible, less popular routes.
Use Google Flights’ “Explore” feature to see where the deals are, and consider a nearby, cheaper airport with easy ground transport.
Taxis and rideshares add up fast. Local buses, trains, and multi-day passes are often cheaper and more authentic.
Avoid baggage fees with a good carry-on — or check if your travel credit card includes a free checked bag perk.
Skip airport currency kiosks. Use a no-foreign-fee debit card at bank-affiliated ATMs, and withdraw larger sums less often.
