Our Luxury Escape at The Ritz-Carlton Fari Islands

It’s truly challenging to capture the essence of our experience at this resort without writing a novel, but let me try: The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands is, hands-down, our favorite resort we’ve ever visited. This isn’t just a claim; it’s a testament to unparalleled luxury, service, and a truly breathtaking setting.

Our journey to this paradise began directly from the opulence of the St. Regis The Palm in Dubai. After a convenient Uber ride from the St. Regis, we boarded an Etihad Airways flight from Abu Dhabi International Airport, bound for the Maldivian dream, landing in Malé, at Velana International Airport
(Google Maps).

Arrival in Paradise: Seamless Transitions & Key Maldivian Tips

Upon landing in the Maldives, our transition through customs was swift and efficient. We were immediately greeted by the attentive Ritz-Carlton Maldives staff, who took care of our luggage and even assisted us in finding an ATM (location near docks VIP lounge).

A crucial tip for any Maldives luxury traveler: most (if not all) resorts take US dollars, which initially surprised us, as we were expecting to use local currency Maldivian currency. Either bring cash to tip or be prepared to withdraw USD directly from ATMs at the airport!

Another vital piece of advice: alcohol is strictly prohibited for import into the Maldives. Consumption is permitted only within your resort, so leave your duty-free purchases at home. Now I do not recall being searched, but they might be checking in luggage under the plane.

After a quick ATM stop and refresh, we boarded a luxurious boat, exclusively hosted by The Ritz-Carlton, for our scenic transfer from Malé to the enchanting Fari Islands.

The Fari Islands Welcome: A Symphony of Service

The Maldives is renowned for its scattered island resorts, and our destination was the exquisite Fari Islands archipelago. We found ourselves to be the sole passengers on the elegant transfer boat, which made the hour-long journey to The Ritz-Carlton docks feel even more exclusive.

We get asked all the time, “hey, why didn’t you all charter a flight? Why did you take a boat?” Well.. the Ritz unfortunately charges an absorbent amount for a boat or plane. Our “shared” charter to/from the island was $1025/pp and we had to pay well in advance. If we opted for the shared seaplane, it was $1600/pp and the plane doesn’t fly certain times or if foul weather (at all). Private seaplane cost? $9,500 round trip.

Our arrival was truly a moment to remember still. As we disembarked, we were greeted with a unique and traditional Maldivian welcome, heralded by a captivating bullhorn – a truly immersive start to our stay. Our dedicated Butler swiftly whisked us away on a golf cart. While our luxurious villa was being prepared, our Butler provided a comprehensive grand tour of the entire resort, showcasing all the stunning pools and an impressive array of exquisite restaurants available to us.

Our Villa: An Unforgettable Upgrade to a Maldivian Dream Suite

Initially, I had chosen an Lagoon Pool Villa with a single bedroom, envisioning tranquil ocean views hovering in the middle of the ocean watching the sunsets. However, upon our final check-in (a delightful process conducted directly in your room, as there’s no traditional front desk!), we were met with an astounding surprise: an unexpected upgrade to a magnificent two-bedroom 3800sqft overwater suite! This expansive haven featured a separate living room, a full kitchen, and its own enormous private pool, all commanding breathtaking, uninterrupted ocean vistas with SUNRISE views. We were absolutely stunned – this upgrade alone represented a value four times the cost of our original booking. What a truly lovely and generous start to our Maldives luxury vacation!

And why is the sunrise better than sunsets? Your tanning starts earlier, your days warmth is longer, and when sunset is coming – you are already at dinner & cocktails! Ask for sunrise views I promise!

Culinary Delights: The Best Buffet Experience & Elite Perks

Almost immediately after settling into our extraordinary villa, we were asked if we’d be interested in joining the resort’s buffet on our first evening. Let me be unequivocally clear: this is no ordinary buffet. This was an unparalleled gastronomic extravaganza, offering everything imaginable, including unlimited fresh lobster, an endless array of gourmet sushi, succulent crab, and so much more!

While I can’t recall the exact price (around $200 per person, if memory serves), it was undeniably worth every single penny. This particular buffet proved to be the absolute highlight of our dining experiences throughout the entire week at the resort. If you are offered the buffet, my advice is simple: embrace it, indulge, and don’t hesitate – it’s an absolute must-do for food lovers!

As an elite Marriott Bonvoy member, I was also extended an exclusive invitation to a cocktail party. This provided a fantastic opportunity to mingle with various staff members, many of whom became fast friends throughout our stay. Thanks to these newfound connections and our friendly demeanor, we certainly enjoyed more than just a couple of complimentary drinks – let’s just say we were “hooked up” all afternoon and enjoyed a wonderfully tipsy time! It truly pays to be genuinely kind and appreciative to the resort staff and to your Aris Meeha or ‘Island Butler’.

Throughout our six-day stay, we reveled in exquisite dining experiences at the resort’s numerous, beautifully appointed restaurants. Each meal was a culinary journey in itself.

La Laconda: Italian fusion restaurant that is also the main restaurant for breakfast. This is located in the middle of all the rooms.
Summer Pavilion: Elevated Chinese food, reservation reauired.
Eau Bar: Laid back lounge late night, sushi restaurant too. It overlooks the main pool and perfect for sunset views including where the nightly ritual occurs.
IWAU: Japanese Omakase style experience overlooking the ocean and stars, reservation required.
Beach Shack: The main restaurant on the main public beach of the resort. We loved this place.
Arabesque: Middle Eastern and Indian fusion restaurant at the Fari Island village, reservation required.
Tum Tum: Food truck on Fari Island village.

Our Favorite Indulgence: Villa Living & The Fari Islands Experience

In all honesty, our absolute favorite pastime was simply cracking open a bottle of Whispering Angel rosé, relaxing by our private, massive pool, and soaking in the sun while listening to music with our villa doors wide open. Every villa comes equipped with a fantastic Bose sound system, so we frequently cranked up our favorite chill house playlists and jammed out – a perfect blend of luxury and personal enjoyment.

Every villa at The Ritz-Carlton Maldives is thoughtfully equipped with two bicycles, allowing for leisurely exploration. Given our two-bedroom setup, our villa came with four bicycles, making it easy for everyone to enjoy the island.

The Spa

On one evening, my partner, Kerry, needed a professional blowout. We easily arranged for her to visit the exquisite spa, where she received a beautiful blowout and a relaxing massage. This also gave me the perfect opportunity to cycle around the island and capture some stunning photographs of the picturesque scenery.

One particularly charming spot we discovered on the island was a whimsical park adorned with artfully placed stones and playful swings – a truly idyllic location for some adorable photo opportunities.

A delightful touch from the resort’s restaurants was the consistent offering of a complimentary appetizer with every meal. We quickly learned that by ordering slightly less food, they would still provide generous complimentary items, ensuring we were always perfectly satisfied without over-ordering. This thoughtful gesture meant we never had to take food back to our room, only to leave it uneaten the next day!

The “Other” Island?

Another unique and highly appealing amenity is the complimentary access to other islands within the Fari Islands archipelago called the Patina Maldives, Fari Islands. Guests can board a transfer boat that takes them to neighboring resort, significantly expanding dining options to include other restaurants and even charming food trucks. We were thrilled to discover that we could conveniently room-charge all our dinners and drinks back to our Ritz-Carlton account as the Patina Maldives, Fari Islands is a member of the Marriott’s Design Hotels. Their pools, oceans views, and our experiences there were ones to remember.
