  • Hotel Facts: The St. Regis New York was founded by

John Jacob Astor IV in 1904. He later died on the Titanic in 1912. The St. Regis was a pioneer. It was one of the first hotels with central air conditioning. Salvador Dalí lived here during the winters for decades. In 1934, the Bloody Mary was perfected at the King Cole Bar. It was renamed the “Red Snapper” to stay polite for the hotel’s refined guests.

  • Elite Upgrades: We received an upgrade to a massive 1,100 sq. ft. suite on the 6th floor.
  • VIP Perks: Booking through a Marriott STARS partner provided incredible added value.

  • Vintage Charm: The rooms feature high ceilings and classic wallpaper.

  • Traditional Rituals: The daily champagne sabering is a must-see event.

  • Gourmet Breakfast: The dining experience feels like a step back in time.

  • The Butler Service: Every room includes a signature St. Regis Butler. They can help with packing/unpacking, garment pressing (two items per day for free), and bringing complimentary coffee or tea to your room at any time.

  • Location: You are at the corner of 5th Avenue and 55th Street. It is prime for shopping and Central Park access, but it can be very busy with traffic and tourists right outside the front door.

  • Dress Code: While the hotel is welcoming, the King Cole Bar and Astor Court generally expect a “smart casual” or “elegant” dress code, especially in the evenings.

  • Old World Tech: While the rooms are renovated, the hotel leans into its heritage. You’ll find physical keys and classic fixtures rather than ultra-modern, “smart-home” minimalist designs.

  • The “Red Snapper”: If you order a Bloody Mary at the bar, remember that here, it’s officially called the Red Snapper!

The St. Regis New York: A Timeless Landmark of Manhattan Luxury

This property was the first St. Regis in the world. To this day, it still stands as a beautiful testament to time and history, especially in New York City. The St. Regis New York remains an icon of luxury in Midtown. We visited during a beautiful winter snowstorm. The experience was legendary.

The Marriott STARS & Luminous Advantage

One of the most important aspects of our stay was booking through the Marriott STARS & Luminous program. As a flagship property, the St. Regis New York offers a “VIP” experience for guests who book via these specialized luxury travel partners.

Our STARS VIP Perks included:

  • Enhanced Room Upgrade: This was key to us securing the large 1,050 sq. ft. suite.

  • Daily Breakfast for Two: We loved the free breakfast provided by the STARS package at the hotel restaurant, La Maisonette.

  • $100 Property Credit: We utilized this toward cocktails at the King Cole Bar and in-room dining.

  • Early Check-in & Late Check-out: This allowed us to enjoy the room longer during the snowstorm.

  • Welcome Amenity: A personalized touch waiting for us upon arrival including two notes from our travel advisors at Classic Travel (thanks Camila & Lance!), a bottle of beautiful Pomerol from France, and chocolate covered strawberries.

  • VIP Status: We were flagged as high-priority guests throughout our stay. Not to mention our Ambassador Elite status helped with Marriott.

Arrival: Seamless and Sophisticated Service

Upon our arrival, the assistance from the outdoor staff was immediately noticed. Attendants helped us out of the vehicle and whisked our luggage away.

The check-in process was handled with incredible speed and efficiency. We transitioned from the car to our suite in what felt like moments. Furthermore, we were delighted to receive that significant room upgrade to a massive St. Regis Suite on the sixth floor, thanks to our STARS booking status.

The Hotel: Grandeur and Old-World Elegance

As you walk through the entryways, everything feels remarkably grand. The hallways are decorated with beautiful lighting, elegant pictures, and massive crystal chandeliers that cast a warm, golden glow over the marble floors. This refined aesthetic extends to every common area, where the air of Gilded Age opulence remains perfectly preserved.

Every day at 6:00 PM, a bottle of champagne is opened with a sword in the lobby. This traditional sabering ceremony includes a brief history of the St. Regis brand, allowing guests to toast to the evening in the same way John Jacob Astor IV once did. Additionally, the hotel provides sturdy umbrellas for guests to use during inclement weather, ensuring that even a Manhattan snowstorm does not dampen the luxurious experience of exploring the city.

The St. Regis Suite: A Sanctuary of Vintage Detail

Our 6th-floor St. Regis Suite was surprisingly large and exceptionally well-appointed. Spanning 1,050 sq. ft. (95 sq. m.), it felt like a true apartment in the sky.

Though our bedroom layout was a little different than the image above, overall rest of the suite matched the floorplan from St. Regis New York website.

Layout and Living Space

This St. Regis Suite featured a large master bedroom with a King bed, two different hallways containing multiple storage closets, and a separate living room with a spacious sitting area.

We appreciated the desk for office work and a cute little table in front of the window—perfect for enjoying an in-room breakfast while watching the snow fall on 5th Avenue.

Bathrooms and Spa Features

The unit included two full bathrooms, which made a world of difference during our stay. The primary bathroom was a highlight, equipped with a bidet and a whirlpool bathtub large enough to fit two people comfortably.

Main bathroom featured a double sink and whirlpool tub, the second bathroom included a single sink, large shower, and toilet and separate bidet.

Unique In-Room Amenities

  • Media: Televisions are located in both the bedroom and living area, and even in the bathroom — we definitely enjoyed the Bose system in the living room for our Netflix passion!

  • Wardrobe: A dedicated jacket holder for your suits is provided in bedroom, as well as two large closets for hanging any garments.

  • Mini Bar: Excellent bar area in the This St. Regis Suite fully stocked with snacks, food, alcohol, soda, and water. While personal cold storage is limited, you can remove items from the refrigerator without being charged.

Restaurants and Lounges: Nostalgia and Fine Dining

The food and beverage experience is divided into distinct, beautiful spaces. For breakfast each day, we enjoyed the All American Breakfast and pancakes at La Maisonette. The service was excellent, and the food was fantastic.

The bar experience consists of two different spots:

  1. The Drawing Room: An open, inviting lounge area where anyone can walk in to grab a cocktail, snack, or light meal.
  2. King Cole Bar: A darker, more intimate area with a mix of sofa seating, chairs, and traditional bar seating. It shares the same menu as the lounge, and their hand-crafted cocktails are a must try.

Amenities: Personalized Care and Comfort

Service is the defining amenity at this luxury property. St. Regis staff is consistently kind, efficient, and welcoming to every guest.

  • Concierge: Located downstairs in the lobby, typically with two staff members available at all times. They are excellent for restaurant recommendations in the area. A special shoutout goes to Lisa at the Concierge desk, who helped us with dinner reservations. She recommended a beautiful French restaurant just down the road called Benoit NYC. The restaurant took incredible care of us—the Executive Chef even came out on behalf of Lisa and the St. Regis to thank us for coming and treated us to something special!

  • Butler Service: The signature St. Regis Butler service handles tea, coffee, and garment pressing.

  • Turndown: Nightly service includes soft music and chocolates.

  • Fitness: A well-equipped fitness center is available for guest use in the summer of 2026. It is currently being renovated.

Final Closing: A Home Away from Home

Staying at the St. Regis New York felt like a true homecoming. Between the massive suite upgrade and the VIP perks provided by the Marriott STARS program, the value of the stay was exceptional.

If any need arises, it is addressed with remarkable speed. We highly recommend this charming and historic hotel for a true New York experience. We look forward to our next visit to this grand Manhattan landmark.
