Overview
Big Sky, Montana is one of the most extraordinary mountain destinations in North America. Two luxury resorts sit at the top of that experience — One&Only Moonlight Basin and Montage Big Sky. We stayed at both back to back, and that gave us a rare, honest perspective on each property.
Let us be clear from the start: both properties are excellent. However, they are not competing for the same traveler. One&Only Moonlight Basin operates in the realm of true ultra-luxury — refined, wellness-forward, and host-driven. Montage Big Sky, on the other hand, is a beautifully executed traditional American mountain luxury hotel — family-friendly, ski-centric, and built for energy and fun.
Understanding that distinction is the most important thing you can take from this comparison.

Arrival & First Impressions
The arrival experience at each property immediately signals which tier it is playing in.
At Montage Big Sky, the arrival is polished and familiar. The exterior channels classic American mountain lodge luxury — stacked stone, rich timber, and a commanding presence recalling properties like the Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe. Stacked firewood flanks both sides of the entrance before you step inside.
The valet team was efficient, doors were opened, luggage was removed, and welcome non-alcoholic cocktails were waiting at reception. It is a confident, well-executed arrival. Comfortable and welcoming — exactly what you would expect from a top-tier American mountain resort.
At One&Only Moonlight Basin, everything feels more intentional. The approach winds quietly through mountain trees before delivering you to a sleek, understated arrival point. There is no grand facade here — and that restraint is entirely deliberate. The valet team moved without a word needing to be spoken. What followed is what separates this property from nearly every domestic luxury resort we have visited.
After being greeted by our dedicated personal host, we were escorted outside for the branding ceremony. We rang a bell to announce our arrival, then branded a personal wooden coaster with a custom iron. We chose a mountain range design — a keepsake that felt genuinely personal. It was unexpected, deeply thoughtful, and set an immediate tone of intentional luxury that a welcome cocktail simply cannot replicate.
Edge: One&Only Moonlight Basin — the arrival experience is in a class of its own among domestic properties.
The Hotel & Public Spaces
These two lobbies tell you everything you need to know about each property’s identity.
Montage Big Sky is a warm and social mountain lodge done beautifully. A large four-sided real-wood fireplace anchors the bar and lobby area. Dark tones, layered textures, and rich mountain décor create a lively, inviting atmosphere. Outside, a log-burning terrace fireplace is refilled by the team every few hours. The space is designed for gathering and socializing — the kind of communal energy that families and groups naturally gravitate toward. It is a luxury hotel, and it wears that identity with confidence.
One&Only Moonlight Basin, however, is not a hotel in the traditional sense. Floor-to-ceiling windows span the full length of the main lodge, framing unobstructed views of Lone Mountain and the surrounding landscape. The design is architectural, modern, and quietly dramatic. Multiple real-wood fireplaces anchor the space without overwhelming it.
Looking out those windows, the entire resort unfolds below — walkways, nature trails, villas, and open mountain terrain. It does not feel like a lobby. Instead, it feels like a private retreat with a world-class team wrapped quietly around you.
Edge: One&Only Moonlight Basin — the design sophistication here reflects true ultra-luxury. That said, Montage Big Sky’s lodge is warmer and more socially inviting, which is exactly right for the traveler it is designed to serve.
The Rooms
The room experience at each property mirrors the broader philosophy of the resort itself.
At Montage Big Sky, the suite is spacious, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed around the ski lifestyle. The large cast-iron coat rack near the entrance doubles as a room divider and gear station — structurally sound enough to hold full luggage, and a smart nod to guests arriving off the mountain with heavy outerwear. Double closets, a generous double vanity, a separate soaking tub, and a large walk-in shower make the room feel thoroughly livable. Plush Montage robes and logo slippers were waiting in the bathroom. The grand lawn patio view delivers that familiar, classic American resort feel.
The in-room fireplace deserves a special mention — it is notably larger than what we encountered at One&Only, and a single button brings it to life. If an oversized fireplace is a priority for your stay, Montage wins that specific detail.
Where Montage reveals its limitations is in the finer points. The refrigerator leaves virtually no room for personal items. There is also no meaningful in-room speaker provided. These are small gaps individually, but together they are telling when placed alongside a property that has considered every single detail.
At One&Only Moonlight Basin, the suite is not simply a luxury hotel room — it is a curated environment. One thing to know upfront: at roughly 725 to 1000 square feet, the suites are generously sized, and the bathrooms are so lovely that the living areas feel more intimate than the square footage suggests. Additionally, there are no rollaway beds or sofabeds available in the hotel rooms, though there is a chaise to relax on. For families, the private cabin or home categories are the better fit.
Heated patio floors greeted us each morning before we had fully processed where we were. The double-sided fireplace serves both the bedroom and the bathroom simultaneously — meaning soaking in a Jacuzzi tub overlooking Lone Mountain with a fire burning beside you is not a special occasion. It is simply Tuesday morning.
The bathroom itself is lovely — a double stone sink, Toto toilet, automatic drop-down shades, and a full mountain-view Jacuzzi. Warm lighting extended into every corner, including inside closets and bathrooms. A mounted Bose speaker under the TV was ready from the moment we arrived — Bluetooth activated! Additional thoughtful touches included a yoga mat, room robes, and a separate robe specifically for yoga classes or traveling to/from the gym.
Hint: Choosing Between Room Types at One&Only:
For those deciding between the suites, cabins, and private homes, here is honest guidance. The hotel suites are ideal for couples who want to be connected to the main lodge with sweeping mountain views. The Alpine & Meadow Cabins offer the most seclusion on property — notably more private than the Big Sky Cabins, which can feel slightly exposed until the snowpack fully builds. For groups of four to ten guests, the private homes are the clear answer. Floor-to-ceiling windows throughout, views from living rooms and even bathtubs, and some homes featuring saunas and oxygen systems make them among the finest group accommodations available anywhere in Big Sky.
Edge: One&Only Moonlight Basin — clearly. Montage delivers a strong luxury hotel room. One&Only delivers a refined ultra-luxury environment where every detail carries a purpose.
Dining
Both properties offer high-quality dining. However, the experiences they deliver are fundamentally different in character.
Montage Big Sky approaches dining like a well-rounded luxury hotel — broad, accessible, and designed to serve a wide range of guests. The Italian restaurant off the main bar is a genuine highlight. A large menu, beautiful ski area views, and a nightly parting pour from a rare aged wine bottle made every dinner here memorable. The bar is equally strong — handcrafted cocktails, a four-sided fireplace, games of checkers by the fire, and standout light bites including venison tartar and a bison, venison, and boar sausage platter.
The breakfast and brunch bar runs until 3 PM and doubles as a complimentary coffee and water station all morning. And then there is the bowling alley — full table service, creative cocktails, and genuinely great pizza. It is fun, energetic, and exactly in line with everything Montage does best.
One&Only Moonlight Basin takes a more curated approach — and frankly, the overall dining program here is stronger than anything else available in Big Sky at this level. Wildwood serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a farm-to-table philosophy that shows in every dish. The fried chicken and biscuit is a must-order. Their handcrafted smoothie menu is equally impressive each morning.
Arika Back — the resort’s modern Japanese fine-dining restaurant helmed by Michelin-starred chef Akira Back — was the single standout meal of our entire Big Sky trip. Sushi, Hamachi, cucumber salad, and a beautifully prepared Japanese-inspired halibut paired with creative cocktails and a server who guided us flawlessly through every choice. Josephine, the lodge bar opening at 5 PM, rounded out each evening with some of the finest craft cocktails of our stay. We gave the bartenders complete creative freedom across multiple nights — and they never missed once.
Then there is Moonshack — an exclusive speakeasy cabin accessible only by poker chip entry. It is unlike anything else on property and feels like a scene straight out of Yellowstone. It is one of those experiences that simply cannot be replicated anywhere else in the market.
Edge: One&Only Moonlight Basin — the dining program here is objectively stronger than its competitors in Big Sky. Montage wins on variety and the novelty of its bowling alley experience, but One&Only operates at an entirely different culinary level.
Ski Access
Ski access is one of the most important practical considerations when choosing between these two properties — and the answer is more nuanced than it first appears.
Montage Big Sky offers true ski-in/ski-out access, directly connected to Big Sky Mountain Resort. When you are done on the mountain, you ski to the door, drop your gear at the full-service ski lodge, and the team takes it from there. Boot drying in heat lockers overnight ensures everything is dry and ready for the next morning. For guests whose primary purpose is maximizing time on the mountain, Montage delivers a level of ski convenience that is difficult to match.
One&Only Moonlight Basin takes a different approach — and it works more smoothly than many guests expect. Guests are transported by ATV, driven by their dedicated personal host, from their accommodations to Sky Lodge. From there, lockers are steps from the gondola. The gondola runs approximately 9 AM to 4 PM during ski season and delivers guests to Madison Base in about five minutes. From there, you click in and ski.
Sky Lodge itself is a full ski hub — equipment lockers directly adjacent to the gondola, full-service rentals, the Neo Life ski boutique, The Landing restaurant, and a grab-and-go café. The Landing has quickly become one of the most sought-after lunch spots on the mountain. The food is genuinely excellent — not simply good for a ski hill. Tables are held for hotel guests during peak season, which matters more than it sounds on a busy powder day.
For families specifically, the ski school logistics at One&Only are actually smoother than many true ski-in/ski-out properties. The flow from accommodations to the gondola to ski school is seamless and well-managed.
Edge: Montage Big Sky for pure ski-in/ski-out convenience. Edge: One&Only Moonlight Basin for ski school flow, gondola logistics, and the overall Sky Lodge experience.
Grounds & Outdoor Spaces
The difference in outdoor experience between these two properties is significant and worth considering carefully.
Montage Big Sky is positioned among neighboring properties, which naturally limits its open outdoor footprint. The grounds are well-maintained and scenic, but wandering freely is not the point here. What Montage does exceptionally well is programming that outdoor space with activity. Ax throwing, lasso practice with a metal bull, throwing golf, and ping-pong fill the main outdoor area with energy. The year-round heated pool and Jacuzzi are excellent additions. Swimming in warm water while snow falls around you is, without question, a genuinely memorable experience.
One&Only Moonlight Basin, by contrast, is built around landscape as a core part of its identity. The resort sits within forest and open meadow, and every element of the outdoor design reflects a deep commitment to tranquility. Nature trails and walking paths connect every section of the property. Heated walkways throughout the resort ensure that even during heavy snowfall, the grounds remain fully accessible on foot.
Three private pool houses with individual Jacuzzis offer a secluded outdoor option for guests who prefer privacy over visibility. The heated outdoor pool is available to all guests year-round. When snow arrived unexpectedly during our stay and blanketed the entire property, the grounds of One&Only took on a level of quiet, romantic beauty that is genuinely difficult to describe.
Edge: One&Only Moonlight Basin — for guests who value landscape, tranquility, and outdoor space as part of a wellness-centered stay. Montage wins for guests who want structured outdoor activity and high-energy programming.
Shopping
Shopping at both properties reflects their respective personalities clearly.
Montage Big Sky centers its retail experience around the ski lodge store. It is a fully integrated ski shop carrying branded apparel, ski gear, cameras, and GoPros. Most practically, it offers overnight boot drying in heat lockers so your gear is fresh and ready for the next morning. This is a genuinely useful, ski-focused offering that most luxury ski properties do not execute at this level.
One&Only Moonlight Basin offers three distinct shopping points across the property. The main lodge boutique sits near the lobby for curated gifts and resort items. The spa boutique carries One&Only branded athletic apparel. Additionally, the ski lodge store on the second floor of the ski building — accessible by a short walk or a side-by-side ride with your host — carries refined outerwear and resort clothing. Prices across all three locations reflect the ultra-luxury positioning of the property without apology.
Edge: Montage Big Sky — specifically for skiers, the boot drying service and fully integrated ski shop deliver a practical advantage that One&Only does not currently match. Montage is also very close to Big Sky Town Center where One&Only is a 23-30 minute drive.
Amenities
Montage Big Sky makes its strongest case in this category — and it is a compelling one.
Montage Big Sky is one of the most amenity-rich luxury mountain resorts we have visited in the United States. The 4-lane bowling alley with full bar and table service is extraordinary for any hotel setting. True ski-in/ski-out access with full gear storage and overnight boot drying makes consecutive ski days genuinely effortless. Lawn games, a year-round heated pool, and a seasonal pool bar keep guests entertained across every hour of the day. This is a hotel built for families and active groups — and it delivers on that promise convincingly.
One&Only Moonlight Basin approaches amenities through an entirely different lens. The Kids Club — included for children ages 5 to 12 — is one of the finest we have encountered at any property. It features a snack bar, pool tables, shuffleboard, and a private movie theater. An outdoor yoga area and indoor Pilates studio reflect the resort’s deep commitment to wellness. The spa leans heavily into altitude recovery programming, featuring an oxygen station, indoor pool, cold plunge, outdoor hot tub, and a dedicated post-treatment lounge. Access to the indoor spa areas is reserved for guests with treatments booked, which keeps the environment remarkably quiet and private.
An observatory is also located on property and offers a remarkable stargazing experience. However, it requires 24-hour advance notice and is rarely mentioned proactively at check-in. Ask about it specifically upon arrival — it is well worth booking.
And then there is Moonshack. This exclusive speakeasy cabin — accessible only by poker chip entry — is one of the most unique amenity experiences available at any luxury property in the country. It is an experience, not simply an amenity.
Edge: Montage Big Sky — for volume, variety, and family-driven programming. One&Only wins for guests whose ideal amenity is wellness, an altitude recovery spa, a Yoga & Pilates studio, and a speakeasy cabin rather than a bowling alley.
Spa & Fitness
Montage Big Sky offers a well-appointed spa program at a meaningfully more accessible price point. In some cases, comparable treatments at One&Only Moonlight Basin run close to double the cost at Montage. For guests who want a quality spa experience without the ultra-luxury price tag, Montage delivers strong value at a high standard. The spa facility itself is spacious, well-staffed, and among the better mountain resort spa offerings in the region.
One&Only Moonlight Basin, by contrast, approaches spa and fitness as a core pillar of the stay rather than an add-on. The spa’s altitude recovery focus sets it apart from every other property in Big Sky. The oxygen station, cold plunge, and post-treatment lounge reflect a genuine philosophy around mountain wellness — not simply a menu of treatments. The fitness facility is the best hotel gym we have encountered at any property. Upon entering, guests are greeted with a complimentary protein shake station, infused waters, and take-home metal water bottles. Every piece of cardio and strength equipment is present and accounted for. An outdoor yoga area, indoor Pilates studio, and a lap pool that opens to the outdoors in summer complete a wellness offering that feels purposefully designed from the ground up.
Edge: One&Only Moonlight Basin — for the overall wellness and fitness experience. Edge: Montage Big Sky on spa affordability and value.
Service
Service is where the distance between these two properties is most clearly felt — and where their true identities are most honestly revealed.
Montage Big Sky delivers good luxury hotel service. The reception team was consistently warm and helpful throughout our stay. Our arrival host was attentive and thorough during the initial tour and room orientation. At its best, the service here reflects exactly what you would expect from a well-run American luxury hotel.
Beyond those structured moments, however, the daily service culture was inconsistent. Staff members passed without making eye contact on multiple occasions. In the bar and common areas, the energy felt less engaged than guests at this price point should reasonably expect. That gap does not ruin the experience — but it does define the ceiling of what Montage ultimately delivers.
One&Only Moonlight Basin does not deliver luxury hotel service. It delivers something categorically different. Every guest is assigned a dedicated personal host for the full duration of their stay. This is not a concierge you can call — it is a person who knows your preferences, anticipates your needs, and is reachable by a simple text at any moment. Our host learned how we travel within hours of arrival and began offering suggestions we had not thought to ask for ourselves.
When we extended our stay and needed bags retrieved from our car, one text message and a few minutes was all it took. Every employee on property greeted us with genuine warmth. Staff touched their chest as a gesture of sincere appreciation. Handwritten notes from various team members arrived throughout our stay. The goodbyes on departure felt personal — because they genuinely were.
One honest caveat worth noting: as the brand’s first U.S. resort, One&Only Moonlight Basin is still in its opening season. Some guests have reported minor service inconsistencies as the team continues refining its systems. Staffing in mountain markets is genuinely difficult, and expectations at this price point are high. If minor growing pains are a dealbreaker, waiting one additional season may be worthwhile. If you can embrace an occasional imperfection in exchange for a property that is architecturally and conceptually ahead of the entire market, it is absolutely worth visiting now.
Edge: One&Only Moonlight Basin — and it is not a close comparison. Montage delivers good hotel service. One&Only, even in its opening season, delivers a hospitality experience that redefines what domestic luxury service can be.
Check-Out
Montage Big Sky handled check-out smoothly and professionally. The valet team was ready, and our car was packed without us lifting a finger. Our final morning coffee by the real-wood lobby fireplaces was a genuinely lovely way to close the stay. Notably, there were no farewell waters or parting gifts — a small detail, but one that becomes apparent after experiencing a property that treats departure as its own moment.
One&Only Moonlight Basin turned check-out into something worth remembering. Luggage was collected from our room, and we spent unhurried time saying goodbye to the team members we had come to know throughout our stay. Farewell waters and a thoughtful departure gift were pressed into our hands by our host. The handwritten notes received over multiple days made the entire experience feel personal in a way that most properties — regardless of price — rarely achieve.
Edge: One&Only Moonlight Basin — departure here is as intentional as arrival. That consistency is precisely what true ultra-luxury should feel like.
When to Visit
Timing matters significantly at both properties, but particularly at One&Only Moonlight Basin given its mountain location and altitude.
January and February deliver peak ski conditions but come with the possibility of brutally cold temperatures. Negative 40 degrees is not a myth in Big Sky — it happens. Come prepared if you visit during these months.
March is the safer choice for guests who want great skiing without the deepest cold. Snow conditions remain strong, and the temperatures become more forgiving.
Summer brings an entirely different energy to both properties. One&Only in particular takes on a Yellowstone-adjacent adventure feel — hiking, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, and wide open Montana landscapes replace the ski season experience entirely. It is worth considering as a destination in its own right, not simply an off-season alternative.
Regardless of season, a minimum of three to five nights is strongly recommended at either property. Both resorts reward guests who slow down and settle in.
