The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands Review
- Hotel Website: The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands
- Location: Google Maps
- Book: Check availability
- Room Type: Overwater Pool Villa – 3766sqft, 2 Bedroom, Private Pool, Overwater Villa, 2 Bedroom, Dining area, Separate living room
- Review Score: Results of our review
- Hotel Fact: The Maldives holds the title of Asia’s smallest country by land area, measuring a mere 115 square miles. However, this tiny landmass is scattered across an expansive 35,000 square miles of ocean, making it one of the most geographically spread-out nations on Earth.
- Seamless Arrival & Maldivian Tips: You experienced a swift transition through customs at Velana International Airport, where Ritz-Carlton staff greeted you and assisted with luggage and finding an ATM. A key tip for future travelers is that US dollars are widely accepted for tipping, and alcohol import is strictly prohibited into the Maldives.
- Exclusive Boat Transfer: After landing, you enjoyed a luxurious, private boat transfer to the Fari Islands, making the hour-long journey feel exclusive. You noted that while the resort’s shared boat transfer was $900/pp, a private seaplane was $9,500 round trip, justifying your choice of boat transfer.
- Unforgettable Villa Upgrade: You received an astounding and unexpected upgrade from a single-bedroom Lagoon Pool Villa to a magnificent two-bedroom, 3800 sqft overwater suite with a private pool and uninterrupted sunrise ocean views.
- Exceptional Culinary Experiences: The unparalleled buffet on your first evening, featuring unlimited fresh lobster and gourmet sushi, was a definite highlight. As a Marriott Bonvoy elite member, you also enjoyed an exclusive cocktail party, leading to complimentary drinks and newfound friendships with the resort staff.
- Stunning Main Pool & Sunset Ritual: The circular main pool, seamlessly integrated with the lagoon, offers a serene retreat. The mesmerizing “ring of fire” sunset ceremony at EAU Bar, accompanied by traditional drums, was a captivating and unforgettable experience.
- Abundant Activities & Amenities: The resort offers a wide array of activities, including a scuba diving center, water sports, and complimentary access to amenities like the fitness center, tennis court, and non-alcoholic beverages in your villa.
- Favorite Indulgence: Your most cherished pastime was relaxing by your private pool in the villa, listening to music on the Bose sound system, and enjoying rosé. Each villa comes with bicycles, and your two-bedroom suite had four, allowing for easy exploration.
- Complimentary Dining & Inter-Island Access: You appreciated the consistent offering of complimentary appetizers with every meal at the resort’s restaurants. A unique perk was the complimentary transfer to other islands within the Fari Islands archipelago, such as the Patina Maldives, which allowed for expanded dining options and the convenience of room-charging everything back to your Ritz-Carlton account.
Bring US Dollars for Tipping: While you might expect to use local currency, most resorts in the Maldives readily accept US dollars. It’s a good idea to have some cash on hand for tipping, and you can withdraw USD from ATMs at the airport.
Alcohol is Prohibited for Import: Do not try to bring alcohol into the Maldives. It is strictly prohibited, so leave any duty-free purchases at home. You can only consume alcohol purchased and served at the resort.
Seaplane vs. Boat Transfer: Be aware of the high cost of transfers to the resort. The speedboat is an expensive but scenic option. A shared seaplane is even more costly and has stricter scheduling limitations and weather restrictions. The resort also offers private yacht and seaplane options for a significantly higher price.
Butler Service is Key: Your stay includes a dedicated “Aris Meeha” or ‘Island Butler’ who will be your main point of contact for everything from check-in to dinner reservations. This personalized service is a major part of the experience.
Don’t Underestimate the Buffet: If you’re offered the buffet dinner, take it. Your review suggests it’s an “unparalleled gastronomic extravaganza” with fresh lobster, sushi, and more, making it a highlight of the dining experience.
Marriott Bonvoy Elite Status Pays Off: If you’re an elite Marriott Bonvoy member, you can expect perks like welcome gifts, late check-out, and potential room upgrades. Your experience shows that being friendly with the staff and leveraging your status can lead to some great added benefits.
Sunrise Views are Worth Requesting: While sunset views are popular, your review makes a compelling case for requesting a sunrise-facing villa. You note that it allows for longer sun exposure and a more relaxed evening, as you’re already out for dinner and drinks by sunset.
Utilize the Free Amenities: The resort offers many complimentary activities, including clear-bottomed canoes, bicycles for exploring, and access to the tennis court. There’s also complimentary access and shared transfers to the neighboring Patina Maldives, which expands your dining options and experience.
The Main Pool is a Destination: The circular main pool is not just for swimming; it’s a central hub. Be sure to visit at sunset for the “ring of fire” ritual, a unique and memorable event accompanied by traditional music.
Complimentary Appetizers are a Bonus: Be mindful of how much you order at the restaurants. The resort often provides generous complimentary appetizers, so you may not need to order as much as you think to feel satisfied.

Introduction
The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands is the finest luxury resort we have ever visited. After years of staying at the world’s most acclaimed properties — from the St. Regis Dubai to One&Only Moonlight Basin to the Ritz-Carlton Maldives itself — nothing has come close to what the Fari Islands experience delivers from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave.
This is our full, honest, first-hand review of the Ritz-Carlton Maldives Fari Islands. We cover everything: how to get there, what the overwater villas are really like, the complete restaurant guide, butler service, the famous Ring of Fire sunset ritual, and every detail you need to decide whether this resort belongs on your travel list. Spoiler: it does.
Getting To The Ritz-Carlton Maldives
We flew into Velana International Airport in Malé from Abu Dhabi on Etihad Airways, arriving directly from a stay at the St. Regis The Palm in Dubai. Landing in the Maldives is seamless — customs moves quickly, and Ritz-Carlton staff were waiting on the other side the moment we cleared. They handled all luggage and guided us directly to the transfer dock, including helping us locate an ATM near the VIP lounge docks before departure.
Transfer pricing to the Ritz-Carlton Maldives is one of the first things guests need to plan for — and budget for well in advance. Here is the complete breakdown of all transfer options from Malé: (Google Maps).
~60 minutes · most popular option · scenic route
Weather-dependent · limited operating hours · can be cancelled
⚓ Private Yacht
$5,000 /charter
Any group size · fully private · no schedule restrictions
$9,500 round trip
Ultimate privacy · departs on your schedule
We chose the shared speedboat at $1,024 per person and paid well in advance. We were the only two passengers on our transfer — making the one-hour journey feel entirely private regardless of the “shared” designation.
Pre-Arrival Tips for The Ritz-Carlton Maldives
Upon landing in the Maldives, our transition through customs was swift and efficient. We were immediately greeted by the attentive Ritz-Carlton Maldives staff, who took care of our luggage and even assisted us in finding an ATM (location near docks VIP lounge).
A crucial tip for any Maldives luxury traveler: most (if not all) resorts take US dollars, which initially surprised us, as we were expecting to use local currency Maldivian currency. Either bring cash to tip or be prepared to withdraw USD directly from ATMs at the airport!
Another vital piece of advice: alcohol is strictly prohibited for import into the Maldives. Consumption is permitted only within your resort, so leave your duty-free purchases at home. Now I do not recall being searched, but they might be checking in luggage under the plane.
After a quick ATM stop and refresh, we boarded a luxurious boat, exclusively hosted by The Ritz-Carlton, for our scenic transfer from Malé to the enchanting Fari Islands.
Currency: Most Maldives resorts, including the Ritz-Carlton Fari Islands, operate exclusively in US dollars. Bring USD cash for tipping or plan to withdraw from ATMs near the VIP lounge at Velana International Airport. Do not assume local currency will be accepted.
Alcohol: Importing alcohol into the Maldives is strictly prohibited — including duty-free purchases from the airport. Consumption is permitted only within your resort. Leave everything at home. The resort’s bar program is extensive and will more than take care of you.
Arrival Experience At The Ritz-Carlton Maldives
The transfer boat docks directly at the Ritz-Carlton’s private arrival point. Disembarking, we were welcomed with a traditional Maldivian ceremony — a captivating bullhorn greeting that immediately signals this experience is different from anything else. Our dedicated Aris Meeha island butler was waiting and whisked us away on a golf cart without a moment’s delay.
While our villa was being prepared, our butler provided a comprehensive grand tour of the entire resort — all pools, every restaurant, the spa, and the surrounding island layout. The Ritz-Carlton Maldives has no traditional front desk. Check-in is conducted entirely within your villa, in private, once you’ve settled in. It is a detail that immediately reframes the entire arrival experience.
The Overwater Villas At The Ritz-Carlton Maldives
We originally booked a one-bedroom Lagoon Pool Villa — a beautiful overwater villa with private pool and ocean views. What we received at check-in was something far beyond that expectation: a spontaneous upgrade to a two-bedroom, 3,800 sq ft overwater suite with a separate living room, a full kitchen, an enormous private pool, and completely uninterrupted sunrise views over the Indian Ocean. The value of the upgrade was approximately four times the cost of our original booking.
Sunrise views are the correct choice at the Ritz-Carlton Maldives. Your day begins earlier and warmer, your private pool time starts hours before sunset-facing guests wake up, and by the time sunset arrives you are already at dinner and cocktails. Always request sunrise orientation when booking.
The villa itself is exceptional in every detail. Every room is equipped with a full Bose sound system. Our two-bedroom setup came with four bicycles for island exploration. The private pool is expansive and genuinely private — surrounded by nothing but open ocean. Opening the villa doors completely, turning on the music, and spending the afternoon by the pool with a bottle of Whispering Angel rosé became our daily ritual. It remains one of the most purely luxurious afternoons we have ever spent anywhere.
The in-villa honor bar is fully complimentary — all non-alcoholic beverages and snacks are included at no charge and restocked twice daily. This level of in-room inclusion is extraordinarily rare. In all our years of luxury travel, we have only encountered it here.
Dining At The Ritz-Carlton Maldives
The dining program at the Ritz-Carlton Fari Islands is one of the most diverse of any luxury resort in the Maldives. Seven distinct venues cover everything from Japanese omakase to casual beach dining, Italian fusion to a Middle Eastern village restaurant. Throughout our six-day stay, every meal was memorable.
La Locanda — Italian Fusion & Breakfast
The resort’s main restaurant, centrally located within the villa grounds. Serves breakfast daily and Italian fusion for lunch and dinner. A consistent and beautiful anchor to every morning.
One dining detail worth knowing: every restaurant consistently offered a complimentary appetizer with every meal. We quickly realized that ordering slightly less still resulted in a generous and satisfying experience — a thoughtful habit that speaks to the overall culture of hospitality at this resort.
The Buffet — Do Not Miss It
On our first evening, we were invited to join the resort’s dinner buffet. This is not a standard hotel buffet. It is an extraordinary spread — unlimited fresh lobster, extensive sushi, crab, and far more. Priced at approximately $200 per person, it is worth every dollar and is the single best dining event we experienced during our entire week on property. If it is offered to you, accept immediately.
Access to Patina Maldives, Fari Islands
Guests have complimentary access to the neighboring Patina Maldives, a Marriott Design Hotels property within the Fari Islands archipelago. A transfer boat runs between the two resorts on a shared schedule, and all charges at Patina can be billed directly to your Ritz-Carlton room account. This effectively doubles the dining and exploration options available during your stay — a genuinely valuable addition.
The Pool At The Ritz-Carlton Maldives
When envisioning a luxury escape in the Maldives, images of pristine beaches and overwater villas often come to mind. Yet, at The Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands, the main pool offers an experience so unique and captivating, it becomes a destination in itself. This isn’t just a place for a dip; it’s the beating heart of the resort, a testament to thoughtful design and unparalleled ambiance.
Nestled gracefully on the resort’s central island, the Ritz-Carlton Maldives main pool is a striking, perfectly circular masterpiece. Its expansive, round form is embraced by the tranquil blue lagoon, creating an illusion of seamless integration with the surrounding ocean. During the sun-drenched hours of the day, this magnificent pool often offers a serene retreat, a quieter haven for those seeking peaceful relaxation amidst the breathtaking scenery of the Fari Islands.
Ring of Fire
The Ring of Fire at Sunset – WOW! As the sun begins its descent, painting the Maldivian sky with hues of orange and purple, the main pool area undergoes a magical transformation. This is when the Ritz-Carlton Maldives sunset ritual truly comes alive, becoming a cherished highlight for many guests. Gather at the sophisticated EAU Bar, where expert mixologists craft exquisite cocktails, perfectly complementing the panoramic views.
As the last rays of sunlight fade, a mesmerizing “ring of fire” is ceremoniously lit upon the water, often accompanied by the rhythmic beat of traditional drums. This captivating ceremony is an unforgettable sensory experience, drawing guests together in a shared moment of awe and celebration, solidifying its place as a quintessential Maldives luxury experience.
Butler Service At The Ritz-Carlton Maldives
Every guest at the Ritz-Carlton Fari Islands is assigned a dedicated Aris Meeha island butler available around the clock. Your butler handles everything — from villa tour upon arrival to restaurant reservations, activity bookings, and any in-villa requests throughout the stay. Ours quickly became part of the fabric of our experience, anticipating needs before we had voiced them.
As Marriott Ambassador Elite members, we were also invited to an exclusive cocktail reception — an opportunity to meet staff and management across the resort in a relaxed, social setting. Those connections genuinely shaped the rest of our stay. Being kind, genuinely appreciative, and socially engaged with the resort team makes an enormous difference at a property like this. It always pays to treat people well.

Private boat charters to uninhabited islands for bespoke dinners are also available for guests seeking a truly unique evening — an experience we plan to indulge on a future visit.
Our Favorite Indulgence At The Ritz-Carlton Maldives
In all honesty, our absolute favorite pastime was simply cracking open a bottle of Whispering Angel rosé, relaxing by our private, massive pool, and soaking in the sun while listening to music with our villa doors wide open. Every villa comes equipped with a fantastic Bose sound system, so we frequently cranked up our favorite chill house playlists and jammed out – a perfect blend of luxury and personal enjoyment.
Every villa at The Ritz-Carlton Maldives is thoughtfully equipped with two bicycles, allowing for leisurely exploration. Given our two-bedroom setup, our villa came with four bicycles, making it easy for everyone to enjoy the island.
The Spa At The Ritz-Carlton Maldives
The spa at the Ritz-Carlton Fari Islands is beautifully appointed and fully capable of matching the level of the resort as a whole. During our stay, Kerry visited for a professional blowout and massage — both executed to a high standard. The ease of booking and the quality of the experience were consistent with everything else the property offers.
One particularly charming discovery during our island time: a small park with artfully arranged stones and wooden swings tucked into the landscape — a quiet, photogenic corner of the island that felt genuinely idyllic to stumble upon.
The "Other" Island?
Another unique and highly appealing amenity is the complimentary access to other islands within the Fari Islands archipelago called the Patina Maldives, Fari Islands. Guests can board a transfer boat that takes them to neighboring resort, significantly expanding dining options to include other restaurants and even charming food trucks.
We were thrilled to discover that we could conveniently room-charge all our dinners and drinks back to our Ritz-Carlton account as the Patina Maldives, Fari Islands is a member of the Marriott’s Design Hotels. Their pools, oceans views, and our experiences there were ones to remember.

FAQ
Sunrise. Your mornings are warmer and longer, your private pool time begins earlier, and by sunset you are already at dinner and cocktails. Sunrise orientation makes far better use of the full day.
The Ring of Fire is the resort’s nightly sunset ritual at the main circular pool. As the sun sets, fire is lit ceremoniously across the water accompanied by traditional drumming, while guests gather at Eau Bar for cocktails. It is one of the most memorable resort experiences in the Maldives and should not be missed.
