Switchbacks, Firewood & a Grand Welcome

Arrival to Montage Big Sky

We passed through Big Sky Town Center on the way in. After stopping at a few favorite shops, we headed up the mountain toward Montage Big Sky. The drive is genuinely beautiful — a winding climb through switchbacks that gains roughly 1,200 feet over just a few miles. At one moment, the surroundings felt more like a neighborhood than a resort. Then, suddenly, the Montage pull-in appeared. The exterior immediately brought to mind the Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe. The architecture shares a similar mountain lodge sensibility — warm, familiar, and impressively executed. Valet management greeted us the moment we pulled in. Our doors were opened, luggage removed, and everything transported to our room without a single ask. Before stepping inside, the mountain atmosphere was already working. Stacked firewood flanked both sides of the entryway. Inside the lobby, multiple real wood fireplaces crackled warmly — creating an unmistakable winter wonderland ambiance, even with a perfect 70-degree day outside. We arrived dressed in cowboy hats and boots, and the reception team matched our energy. Check-in was smooth and genuinely welcoming. After receiving a room upgrade, we were handed cocktails as a welcome gesture. Our host led us on a brief property tour before escorting us to our suite and walking us through every feature inside, including the fireplace.
American Mountain Luxury, Through and Through

The Montage Big Sky Hotel & Resort

Montage Big Sky channels a very specific kind of luxury. It’s warm, layered, and rooted in the traditions of American mountain hospitality. The lobby fireplaces are a genuine centerpiece — aesthetically stunning and emotionally grounding. You feel it the moment you walk in, and that feeling stays throughout the stay. The main Alpenglow Lobby Bar, anchored by a large four-sided fireplace visible from the entrance, is the natural social heart of the property. Dark tones, rich textures, and an inviting energy define the space. It’s the kind of bar you find yourself returning to repeatedly. One area worth noting is staff consistency throughout the property. At the front desk and with our arrival host, service was warm and attentive. However, some staff encountered elsewhere during our stay were less engaging. For a property of this caliber, consistent warmth across the entire team matters — and we missed it at times. It’s a notable contrast when compared to properties like One&Only or the Ritz-Carlton, where every team member greets you proactively.
Comfortable, Spacious & Genuinely Cozy

The Suites at the Montage Big Sky Resort

Once our host departed, we settled in immediately. Opening the patio door to a large outdoor space overlooking the grand lawn gave the room an instant sense of freedom. In some ways, it reminded us of the Ritz-Carlton Lake Oconee in Georgia — though notably, Montage Big Sky suites include in-room fireplaces, which the Oconee does not offer. Our welcome amenities were generous. A large fruit bowl, a bottle of champagne, and an assortment of sweet treats greeted us on arrival. Special thank you to Classic Travel. The suite itself was beautifully appointed — a walk-in shower, a separate soaking tub, and a double vanity. Two oversized robes and Montage-branded slippers hung in the bathroom. Naturally, we put them on immediately. Only thing missing was a Toto heated toilet. Sad to not have that! Storage throughout the room was excellent. Double closets, multiple drawers, and a large cast-iron coat rack near the entryway provided ample organization. That coat rack was a standout detail — architecturally striking, structurally sound, and perfectly suited for a ski resort where guests arrive loaded with outerwear. Our baggage handler even hung full luggage pieces from it without hesitation. The in-room fireplace was notably large — larger than what we experienced at One&Only Moonlight Basin. A single button press brings it to life. For guests who prioritize a dramatic in-room fireplace, Montage clearly wins that category. One minor note: the minibar leaves no room for personal items. If you need to keep wine or champagne cold, request ice — or, in colder months, leave bottles outside overnight. Insider tip: In cold-weather months, store your wine or champagne outside overnight. By morning, it will be perfectly chilled without the need for ice. One area for improvement: the in-room speaker was underwhelming. We always travel with a portable Sonos for this reason — energy matters in a hotel room, and great music makes all the difference. This is something One&Only Moonlight Basin handles better with their in-room Bose setup.
Seven Ways to Eat Well at Montage

Dining On-Site at the Montage Big Sky

The dining program at Montage Big Sky is one of the most varied we’ve encountered at a mountain resort. From a full Italian dinner to Thai-inspired cuisine, a lively pub, and a morning brunch market — there is genuinely something for every mood and moment.
Venue Type Hours / Notes
Cortina Italian dinner Evening dining; ski slope views; large menu; vintage wine send-off
Alpenglow Lobby Bar Cocktails & light bites All-day bar; four-sided fireplace; handcrafted cocktails; checkers available
Wildflower Market Breakfast & brunch Open until 3 PM; free coffee & water all day; cocktails and beer available
Beartooth Pub & Rec Casual pub dining 4-lane bowling alley; full menu & cocktail service; reservations recommended
Backcast Thai-inspired cuisine Seasonal hours; unique menu offering a flavorful departure from mountain fare
In-Room Dining Full menu Available throughout the day and evening from your suite
Private Dining Custom experience Available for special occasions and groups; arrange through the concierge
Pool Bar Cocktails Open summer & winter; closed during shoulder season
Dinner at Cortina was a consistent highlight of our stay. The menu is expansive — a welcome change from properties with more limited dining options. We sat beside windows overlooking the ski area, the outdoor lawn, the fire pit, and the pool below. Highly recommend the steak. At the end of each dinner, the team delivered a complimentary pour from a vintage bottle of Baltimore-based wine — a charming and memorable touch that elevated every meal. The Alpenglow Lobby Bar became our regular evening anchor. Handcrafted cocktails, light bites, and seating near the four-sided fireplace made it the perfect spot for a game of checkers and a nightcap. The venison tartare and the sausage platter — featuring bison, venison, and boar — were standout choices. The sausage platter in particular comes highly recommended for bold, protein-forward palates. Wildflower Market was a daily ritual. Breakfast was included in our stay through Classic Travel. The market is open until 3 PM and offers everything from made-to-order breakfast sandwiches to lattes. Free coffee and water are available almost all day. Cocktails and beer are also on offer, making it an easy go-to for a midday refresher between activities. Beartooth Pub & Rec was an experience of its own. We ordered pizza one evening while bowling — and it was fantastic. Nothing quite compares to rolling strikes, sipping cocktails, and eating great food inside a luxury mountain resort. Servers come to your lane, so the experience is seamlessly taken care of throughout.
A Resort Built Around the Mountain

The Grounds at the Montage Big Sky

The grounds at Montage Big Sky are designed around the ski experience rather than expansive nature walks. The resort sits among neighboring properties, which limits open landscape somewhat. Guests seeking extensive hiking or walking trails will find more of that at One&Only Moonlight Basin. Montage is purposefully oriented around family, skiing, and indoor comfort. What the grounds do offer is lively and well-curated. The main backyard lawn features an impressive collection of outdoor games — ax throwing, a lasso pull with a metal bull, throwing golf, and ping-pong. With very few children around during our shoulder-season stay, the games were freely available and thoroughly enjoyable. Just outside the main bar is a large log-burning fireplace. Unlike the gas fireplaces at Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe, this one burns real wood and is restocked with fresh logs every few hours. On a snowy evening, settling in beside it after a long day on the slopes is one of the resort’s most memorable experiences. The heated outdoor pool and jacuzzi are open year-round, including winter. Swimming in warm water while snow falls around you is genuinely special. The connected pool bar is a welcome addition during summer and winter peak seasons, though it is closed during shoulder season.
Everything You Need for the Slopes

Shopping On-Site

Compass Sports Retail & Survival Resources (Ski Shop): Montage Big Sky’s primary retail destination is the ski lodge store, located just off the main lobby and Alpenglow bar area. It is a full-service ski shop in every sense. Inside, you’ll find Montage-branded apparel, ski gear, GoPros, and ski cameras alongside storage lockers and equipment bins.

Most impressively, the ski shop offers boot drying inside heat lockers overnight. After a long day on the mountain, guests drop their gear at the door and have everything dried and ready for the following morning. It’s a thoughtful service that skiers and snowboarders will genuinely appreciate.

Pique Boutique: This boutique covers everything from dresses, to boots, to gifts. Excellent source for everything you need in your stay that you might have left at home.

Boutique at Spa Montage: There is a boutique located inside of the Montage Big Sky Spa.

Offsight -> Big Sky Town Center: Though you will need a car or ride to the Town Center – this covers you for dinning, shopping, gifts, coffee, liquor store, grocery store, and pharmacy. Everything you need before you arrive to Montage Big Sky!

More to Do Than Hours in the Day

Amenities at the Montage Big Sky, Montana

Montage Big Sky’s amenity list is genuinely impressive. Beartooth Pub & Rec stands out as one of the most unique offerings at any luxury hotel we’ve visited. The four-lane bowling lounge is large, warm, and well-decorated — a perfect destination after a full day on the mountain. Full menu service and cocktail ordering are available throughout, and reservations are strongly recommended during busy periods. The outdoor lawn game collection adds a playful and social dimension. Ax throwing, lasso pulling, throwing golf, and ping-pong all occupy the main backyard, creating a natural gathering point few mountain resorts can match. The ski access here is Montage’s defining amenity. Guests have direct access to the Lewis & Clark ski lift, right on the property, connecting to both Lone Mountain and the broader Big Sky Mountain ski area — one of the largest in North America. Skiing in and dropping equipment at the ski shop takes minutes. If skiing is your primary reason for visiting Big Sky, Montage offers the most direct and seamless connection to the slopes in the area.
Approachable Pricing, Full Experience

Spa & Fitness

The spa at Montage Big Sky is a strong offering. Treatment pricing is considerably more accessible than what we encountered at One&Only Moonlight Basin — where spa costs were sometimes double those at Montage. For guests who want a full wellness experience without premium pricing, Montage represents real value in this category.

The spa space is well-appointed and provides everything expected of a mountain resort at this level. We highly recommend taking advantage of it, particularly after active days on the slopes or out on the trails.

Coffee by the Fire, One Last Time

Check-Out

Leaving was bittersweet. Our morning coffee ritual at Wildflower Market and in the main lobby — seated beside the real wood fireplaces — had become one of our favorite parts of each day. Those lobby fireplaces are aesthetically extraordinary. Sitting there while fresh snow began to fall outside made the goodbye feel appropriately cinematic. Check-out itself was smooth. The same valet who welcomed us on arrival was there to see us off. Our car was packed without any involvement on our part. No farewell gifts or waters to go were offered — a small contrast from our experience at One&Only Moonlight Basin — but the send-off remained warm. Our overall experience was a strong one, and we left with no regrets.
The Right Resort for the Right Traveler

Final Thoughts

Choosing between Montage Big Sky and One&Only Moonlight Basin is genuinely a matter of what kind of experience you’re after. Both are exceptional properties. They simply serve very different purposes. Montage Big Sky carries a lively, social energy. There’s activity here at every turn. During our stay, we could hear neighboring guests on one occasion — a reminder that this is an active, connected property. If your neighbors were celebrities, you’d likely spot them at Alpenglow. At One&Only, you’d never know they were there. Montage is rooted in traditional American mountain luxury — polished, comfortable, and familiar. It’s an outstanding resort for what it is. It simply serves a different purpose than the more intimate, retreat-style experience at One&Only. Both deserve a place on your Big Sky travel list. The question is simply: what does this trip need to be?
“Montage Big Sky is where the mountain comes alive. One&Only is where you come to rest. Both have their moment — knowing which one you need is the real luxury.”
