  • Hotel Fact: The design of The Ritz-Carlton, Fort Lauderdale was inspired by luxury ocean liners and the city’s identity as a cruise port. In fact, the shape of the building mimics the stern of a cruise ship—a nod to Fort Lauderdale’s nautical heritage. Even the interiors carry this theme, with leather-wrapped furniture and beach-inspired artwork that make you feel like you’re sailing in style without ever leaving shore.

  • Honest and Humorous Tone: The hotel’s appearance, particularly the lobby and entrance, is described as a bit worn and showing its age. However, this is presented as a positive, as it makes the hotel a great value for the price.

  • Exceptional Staff: The check-in and overall staff are highlighted as “super nice” and “always comforting,” providing a seamless and high-quality service experience.

  • Stellar Rooms and Views: The rooms themselves are described as luxurious and having a classic Ritz-Carlton feel. The biggest highlight is the “breathtaking ocean view” from the balcony, which is a major source of enjoyment despite the balcony being a bit worn.

  • Fantastic Dining: The food is a major “redemption story” for the hotel. Burlock Coast Seafare & Spirits and the Sea la Vie Sundeck are praised for their excellent food and atmosphere.

  • Great Amenities: Both the pool and beach experiences are described as “fantastic,” with impeccable service from the staff.

  • Excellent Value: The final verdict is an 8.1 out of 10, with a strong emphasis on the “stellar value for money.” The reviewer recommends it as a better option than other Marriott properties in the area for a luxury experience on a more affordable scale.

  • Renovations: The property underwent a significant renovation in 2015, which included the lobby, a new restaurant and bar (Burlock Coast), a spa makeover, and updates to the guest rooms. This explains the “traditional” feel you noted, as it reflects a design from that time.

  • Key Amenities:

    • A 29,000 square-foot oceanfront sundeck with an infinity pool and private cabanas.

    • A full-service spa with a variety of treatments.

    • A 24-hour fitness center.

    • Access to the private, members-only Grande Oaks Golf Course.

    • A Club Lounge with exclusive benefits, including five daily culinary presentations.

  • Room Features: All 192 guest rooms and suites feature private balconies with views of either the Atlantic Ocean or the Intracoastal Waterway. Many also feature marble bathrooms.

Introduction

Ritz-Carlton Fort Lauderdale Review: An Honest Look at the Beach's Most Recognizable Luxury Hotel

Let me be upfront about something: The Ritz-Carlton Fort Lauderdale is probably one of the less spectacular properties in the Ritz-Carlton portfolio. That’s not a knock on the brand — it’s an honest observation about Fort Lauderdale itself. The area is heavily touristed, the beach corridor takes a beating from the sun and salt air year-round, and virtually every property on this strip — the Four Seasons down the road, the W, all of them — shows signs of wear that would be difficult to address without a prolonged closure. The Ritz is not uniquely affected here. It’s just an honest reality of what high-demand beachfront properties face in South Florida.

For a better beach experience, I highly recommend The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island.

With that said — and this is equally important — the food at this hotel is genuinely excellent, the pool and ocean experience is fantastic, the service is classic Ritz-Carlton warmth, and the room itself delivers exactly what you’d expect from the brand. At its price point, it remains the best luxury option on Fort Lauderdale Beach outside of the Four Season Fort Lauderdale. This is our full, honest review.

Honest Context

The Fort Lauderdale Reality — What to Expect Before You Arrive

  • This is an honest review. The Ritz-Carlton Fort Lauderdale has real strengths and real limitations. Both are worth understanding before you book. The summary: the inside is great, the food is great, the pool is great. The exterior of the building and some of the common areas show their age — and that’s true of virtually every comparable property on this stretch of Fort Lauderdale Beach.

Location

Fort Lauderdale’s beach corridor is a high-demand, heavily touristed area. The sun, salt air, and constant occupancy take a toll on beachfront properties here in ways that are difficult to fully address without extended closures. The Ritz-Carlton is no exception — and neither are its neighbors. The Four Seasons down the road and the W Fort Lauderdale face the same challenge. This isn’t a management failure. It’s simply the reality of what oceanfront properties in South Florida endure.

Hotel Entrance

Walking into the hotel for the first time, the entrance doors feel underwhelming — narrow, a bit worn, and not the grand arrival you’d expect from the brand. There’s also a set of stairs immediately inside before you reach check-in, which feels like an unusual design choice. The lobby itself and the corridor from the elevators to the restaurant lack the drama and presence of the Ritz-Carlton properties we’ve visited elsewhere. This hotel has clearly been the quiet one in the portfolio for a while — some corners simply haven’t received the same attention as the experience inside the rooms and at the pool.

All of that noted — none of it stopped us from having a genuinely enjoyable stay. And the food, the ocean, and the service more than compensated.

Arrival & The Hotel

Checking In — Warm Service in a Dated Exterior

Checking in at the Ritz-Carlton Fort Lauderdale is always a smooth experience — that part hasn’t changed. The staff are genuinely warm, comforting, and easy to engage with. Whatever the building’s exterior challenges, the people inside consistently deliver the Ritz-Carlton standard. Check-in is quick and friendly, and the team sets a relaxed, welcoming tone from the first interaction.

The lobby itself is fine — the fireplaces, the comfortable seating — but it lacks the drama and presence you’d find at comparable Ritz-Carlton properties. The walk from the elevators back to the restaurant feels particularly flat, more corridor than destination. The hotel carries a more traditional Ritz-Carlton aesthetic rather than a modern one — think Amelia Island rather than Dove Mountain. That’s not inherently a problem, but it does mean this isn’t the property you’d choose if design-forward luxury is your priority.

The Room

The Room — Every Ritz Comfort, Some Dated Details

Once you get into the room, the familiar Ritz-Carlton quality reasserts itself. The room is comfortable, well-appointed, and delivers the five-star standard the brand is known for. All rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows, a private balcony with either Atlantic Ocean or Intracoastal Waterway views, marble bathrooms, flat-screen TV, and pillow-top bedding. The layout is spacious at around 500 square feet for standard rooms.

The balcony was a slight disappointment — the decor felt worn and a little sparse, similar to how things feel at the Ritz-Carlton Amelia Island — but the view of the pool and the ocean beyond more than made up for it. Having morning coffee out there watching the Atlantic is genuinely lovely. That’s a ritual we’d repeat every day without hesitation.

The bathroom is well-executed but leans traditional in its design — more marble-and-brass than sleek and contemporary. For guests accustomed to the newer Ritz-Carlton properties, it will read as dated. For guests who appreciate classic luxury hotel design, it’s entirely comfortable and functional.

  • If you want to upgrade your room experience meaningfully, the Club Lounge access on the 8th floor is worth serious consideration. All-day food and beverage service with Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal views significantly elevates what is otherwise a straightforward room stay.
Dining

Ritz-Carlton Fort Lauderdale Restaurants — Burlock Coast Is the Real Star

The food at this hotel is genuinely the bomb — and that is not an exaggeration. Whether it’s the outdoor bar, the main restaurant, or a quick grab from the Marketplace, every dining experience here was a strong one. Burlock Coast is legitimately one of the better restaurant experiences on Fort Lauderdale Beach, not just within the hotel.

Burlock Coast Seafare & Spirits

Daily · 7:00 AM – 10:00 PM · Weekend Brunch: Sat & Sun 11:30 AM – 4:00 PM
The hotel’s flagship restaurant — and the property’s standout experience. Farm-to-table coastal cuisine inspired by Prohibition-era rum runners, with a focus on fresh South Florida seafood and ingredients sourced from local farmers and fishermen. Four Diamond rated. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily. The weekend brunch is well-regarded — à la carte menu with a $39 bottomless beverage package and a Build-Your-Own Bloody Mary Bar. Oceanfront patio seating with sunset views and occasional live violin music makes it an excellent choice for a special evening. Private dining rooms accommodate 6–40 guests for events.

The Marketplace at Burlock Coast

Daily · 6:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Grab-and-go breakfast items, Panther Coffee, fresh pastries, and morning essentials. A genuinely good quick-start option before a pool day or an early departure. The coffee here is excellent.

Poolside Café — Sea La Vie Sundeck

Daily · Pool hours
Food and cocktail service directly on the 29,000 sq ft oceanview sundeck. Drinks are consistently refreshed and the service at the pool is genuinely attentive. A cold cocktail with the Atlantic in front of you — it doesn’t need to be anything more complicated than that.

Pool & Beach

The Pool & Beach — The Best Part of This Hotel

The pool and ocean experience at the Ritz-Carlton Fort Lauderdale is fantastic — full stop. The elevated 29,000-square-foot tropical sundeck features an infinity pool and private cabanas with unobstructed Atlantic views. Drinks are constantly refreshed. The service poolside is attentive without being intrusive. This is where the hotel shines most consistently, and it is where Kerry and I spend the majority of our time.

The pool area does show some wear — much like the Amelia Island Ritz-Carlton, it carries that older-property feel in its surroundings. But the experience itself — the view, the drinks, the warmth, the sound of the ocean — remains genuinely lovely. Private cabanas are available for a more secluded setup and can be booked in advance through the resort.

The beach access is direct and immediate. Ocean and pool side by side, with consistent drink service at both. For anyone who comes to Fort Lauderdale primarily to be in and around the water, this hotel delivers exactly what that requires.

Final Verdict

Is the Ritz-Carlton Fort Lauderdale Worth It?

Book if you…

Want the best luxury option on Fort Lauderdale Beach. Love great food and consistent pool service. Prioritize staff warmth over design drama. Want direct beach access with Ritz-Carlton service.

Know before you go…

The exterior and some common areas show their age — this is a more traditional, older Ritz property. Not a design-forward experience. The entrance and lobby lack the wow factor of newer Ritz-Carlton properties.

At the end of the day, the Ritz-Carlton Fort Lauderdale rates around an 8.1 out of 10 — and that score is largely anchored by value. This is not an expensive Ritz-Carlton property, and it is genuinely better than every other Marriott-family property in Fort Lauderdale without question. The Marriott properties on this strip are a significant step down across the board.

The food is the bomb. The pool is great. The ocean is right there. The service is consistently warm. And the room itself delivers the Ritz-Carlton standard you’d expect. If you’re heading to Fort Lauderdale Beach and want the best luxury experience available — this is still the answer, worn entrance doors and all.
