From Mérida to the St. Regis Kanai Resort, Riviera Maya
We started this trip in Mérida — one of Mexico’s finest inland cities — before a three-hour drive toward Cancun brought us to what quickly became one of our favorite hotel stays anywhere in the world: the St. Regis Kanai Resort, Riviera Maya. We arrived with limited expectations — photos of a property built above mangroves, a unique setting that was hard to picture at scale — and left with a clear opinion. This is the finest luxury resort in Mexico.
This is our full review, covering the mangrove setting, the Vincent Astor Suite, the pools, the champagne sabrage ritual, Toro by Chef Richard Sandoval, and everything that makes Kanai worth serious consideration for your next Mexico trip.
The Setting — Mangroves, Mayan Design & the Caribbean
The St. Regis Kanai occupies a position unlike anything else on the Riviera Maya. The resort is built on stilts above a preserved red mangrove forest within a 680-acre gated reserve, with elevated walkways connecting each building across the ecosystem below. The design means guests move through the natural habitat rather than around it — every walk between pools, restaurants, and rooms offers a different view of the mangroves and the Caribbean beyond.
The adjacent Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, borders the property directly. That boundary matters practically: it ensures the surrounding natural environment stays protected, which keeps the resort’s views, quiet, and wildlife consistently intact in a way no landscaping can replicate. All 124 rooms and suites offer ocean views despite being set within the mangrove forest — the architecture was designed specifically around that combination.
Arriving at the St. Regis Kanai
We pulled into the valet with some lingering uncertainty about what to expect. That uncertainty resolved within minutes. The open-air lobby, designed for the warm climate, sits in the natural environment rather than sealed from it — the reception desk is outdoors, framed by mangroves and the sound of the Caribbean beyond. We were greeted immediately, given a welcome drink, and moved through check-in efficiently. It set the right tone from the first moment.
The Vincent Astor Suite — One of Two on the Property
We booked a standard configuration and were upgraded to the Vincent Astor Suite via Marriott Ambassador Elite status. There are only two of these suites on the entire property — if securing one is a priority, request it by name in advance and reference your status at booking.
The Suite
Corner room, ground floor, ocean view. King bed, soaking tub, walk-in shower. Positioned as the first room closest to the beach, restaurants, and pools — no elevators, no corridors between the room and the rest of the resort.
Private Outdoor Space
A large private lap pool on the terrace and a separate outdoor whirlpool. The terrace is the defining feature — it changes how you use the entire room and makes the suite’s ground-floor position a genuine advantage rather than a compromise.
The photos truly speak for themselves when it comes to the magic of our suite. It boasted a gigantic room, a massive bathtub perfect for soaking, a beautiful shower, and every amenity one would expect from a top-tier luxury resort. With this suite, there is only two on the whole property!
Our Personal Outdoor Pool & Living Space
This exquisite atudio, 1 king room offers unparalleled access to the best of the resort, situated on the ground floor as the very first room closest to the beach, restaurants, and pools. As a corner room facing the ocean, it provides breathtaking ocean views from its private large lap pool, private terrace, and outdoor whirlpool.

Breakfast here was included with our stay and we ate here every morning. The buffet is extensive — fresh-squeezed juices in every variety were a particular highlight for Kerry. Note: Chaya serves breakfast only on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Dinner on those evenings means Toro or another venue.
Riviera

A St. Regis signature ritual: a bottle of champagne opened with a sword at the lobby bar, every evening at sunset. We were there every night. It sounds ceremonial — it is, and it earns it. Arrive before sunset to get a good seat.

Delight in chocolate and conversation with fellow travelers to Mexico in this charming space. We invite luminaries from all walks of life to taste delicacies prepared with Mexican cacao or to experience our acclaimed Afternoon Tea.
Jack’s Club

A sports bar and theater area with a more casual evening energy. We caught a major soccer match here and ended up spending hours with a Marriott staff member we’d met earlier at the pool. Casual, comfortable, and a good change of pace from the fine dining options.
During our stay, a major soccer game was on, and we found ourselves in the hotel’s theater bar area called Jack’s Club. There, we reconnected with a friendly Marriott worker we had met previously at a different pool bar. We hit it off, sharing numerous drinks and enjoying the game together. This personal connection truly highlighted the friendly and accommodating nature of the staff, making the property feel even more like a blast.

The Pools at St. Regis Kanai — Multiple Options, One Clear Favorite
We were also incredibly fortunate to visit during a slow period in mid-July. This meant no fighting for lounge chairs, no long lines, and virtually no wait times for anything – a truly serene and exclusive experienced
In the afternoons, our routine involved lounging by the pools and enjoying plenty of cocktails. The “quiet pool,” almost an adult-only oasis, quickly became our favorite.
We met some wonderful people there, and with the attentive staff, the margaritas flowed freely throughout the weekend!

The St. Regis Kanai is our top recommendation for luxury travel in Mexico — and it sits comfortably among the best resort stays we have had anywhere. The mangrove setting, the Mayan-inspired circular architecture, the UNESCO World Heritage Site as a neighbour, and a private Caribbean beachfront combine in a way no other Riviera Maya property can replicate.
The fact that it’s not all-inclusive is a feature, not a drawback. Every plate at Toro and every glass at the lobby bar reflects a food and beverage program that doesn’t need to operate at buffet scale.
