The Nines, A Luxury Collection Hotel: Premier Luxury in Downtown Portland
The Nines, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Portland, Oregon, is definitely a must-stay hotel and a spectacular property. Part of the Marriott Luxury Collection, this hotel exudes sophistication and features a truly unique design that sets it apart in the Downtown Portland landscape. This time, we decided to stay at this luxury collection property, which did not disappoint, especially compared to our previous stays at the Hi-Lo, Autograph Collection around the corner. You can book this hotel directly through Classic Travel.
Introduction: Sophistication in the City of Roses
The Nines distinguishes itself as a premier Luxury Collection hotel in Portland. Its sophistication is immediately evident upon arrival. The hotel’s unique structure, which is built atop a former department store, means the experience begins with an initial elevator ride straight up to the hotel lobby on the 8th floor. From there, you navigate another level to access the restaurants on the upper floors, with guest rooms starting on the 9th floor and above. This multi-level feature creates a distinct feel, blending an almost Moxy-style vibrant communal element with high-end, elegant design throughout.
Arrival Experience: Grand Entrance and Seamless Service
Walking in, the experience immediately impacts your excitement. Bell service is prompt and highly supportive, ensuring you never have to worry about the door or your luggage. You immediately notice the grand entrance and the beautiful aesthetic. Unlike many properties where the reception is at ground level, the 8th-floor lobby makes for a spectacular reveal. This space is fantastic and a unique spot to walk through by itself, showcasing the hotel’s commitment to artistry and design, from the hallways to the common areas.
The Hotel: A Hub of Art and Elevated Design
This is an extremely hip hotel that is beautifully decorated with very unique art on almost every floor and along the hallways. The blend of classic elegance (befitting a luxury collection) and contemporary design gives the hotel a sophisticated edge. There is a lot of romantic vibe to this hotel—a warmth and elegance we certainly did not find at the Hi-Lo Autograph Collection around the corner. The sophisticated, cozy, and luxurious atmosphere is a core part of its appeal, making it a destination in itself.
The Hotel Room: Suite Comfort and Luxury Bells
During this property stay, we enjoyed a suite, thanks to a lovely upgrade from Marriott. Our room was absolutely gorgeous, featuring a complete setting area with a couch and chairs, and of course, the beautiful, comfortable bed you expect from a Luxury Collection property. The large bathroom was fully upgraded and updated, featuring all the bells and whistles you’d expect out of a luxury brand. We visited this time in the summer and were excited about the warmer climate, but regardless of the season, a room with top-tier comfort is appreciated. My wife always loves the plush slippers and robes from nice luxury properties, so we were smiling after a shower and being able to relax and cozy up in the hotel wear.
Restaurants Onsite: Upscale Dining and Cocktail Lounges
The Nines offers a number of impressive dining and drinking venues. We enjoyed every culinary aspect of the hotel except for the room service experience (which is offered if you don’t feel like being out in public).
Our favorite meal was at Urban Farmer Steakhouse on the ninth floor. It offers a lively, fun, and very enjoyable atmosphere perfect for dinner with friends. The menu focuses on quality and farm-to-table ingredients, elevating the traditional steakhouse experience.
For cocktails, we went to The Living Room, which is essentially a cocktail bar situated adjacent to the Urban Farmer Steakhouse. Located on the same floor with a unique entryway, it’s a quick spot to transition for a pre- or post-dinner drink.
There is a third restaurant on the rooftop which features Asian cuisine. We did not try this restaurant, as we were exploring some of the more surrounding downtown restaurants during our stay.
Onsite Dining and Lounge Options
| Urban Farmer | Upscale Steakhouse / Farm-to-Table | 8th Floor | Great for dinner; features a vibrant and enjoyable atmosphere. |
| The Living Room | Cocktail Lounge / Bar | 8th Floor | Excellent spot for handcrafted cocktails near Urban Farmer. |
| The Rooftop Restaurant | Asian Cuisine | Rooftop | Offers a different culinary experience (Note: Did not visit). |
Shopping Onsite (and Nearby)
While the hotel itself does not feature extensive retail, its location is one of its biggest assets for shopping. This hotel is right near all the action, and you can quickly walk to major shopping centers and boutiques. The Nines sits directly adjacent to major Downtown Portland shopping destinations, making it the perfect base for retail therapy.
Activities & Amenities: The Library Room and Fitness
The Nines offers several unique public spaces that enhance the guest experience:
The Library Room: This unique space allows you to enjoy the lofty combination of books and libations. As the perfect escape from the strains of the day, The Library Room offers both a pool table and floor-to-ceiling books, provided by the famous Powell’s Books—which guests are encouraged to browse and read. You can fall back into the inviting comfort of a soft leather chair with a smoky scotch in hand or challenge a friend to a competitive game of billiards. This space is a true homage to the classic pub of old, offering comfort in both company and solitude.
The Spa and Wellness Facilities
(Note: As your review did not include details regarding the spa services, we recommend inquiring about their dedicated wellness and treatment options upon arrival to fully complete the luxury experience.)
Final Closing: A Highly Recommended Luxury Stay
All in all, this is an extremely hip hotel that is beautifully decorated. The unique design, from the 8th-floor lobby to the artwork on every floor, makes it an unforgettable place to stay. You can quickly walk to places to eat, shopping, as well as just simply enjoy the comfort the hotel offers. The combination of grand service, beautiful rooms, and outstanding dining makes this a must-stay in the city. I highly recommend The Nines in Portland for sure!

I travel for a living, a Delta 1 Million Miler 1MM, 10 years Diamond Medallion, 7 years straight Marriott Ambassador Elite, and oddly still Hilton Diamond (lame!). It’s the stories I collect along the way that truly fuel me.
From high-rise hotels in buzzing metropolises to quiet beachside cafés tucked between palm trees, my career takes me across the United States and beyond—and I take every opportunity to explore, taste, and soak up the local vibe. Whether I'm grabbing late-night bites in Belgium, sipping wine in Napa, or discovering rooftop gems in New York City, I always keep an eye out for the places and moments worth sharing.
